摘要

The representation of India by British artists is a phenomenon without parallel in the history of art: no other country has been depicted so widely and so minutely by artists from another. European artists, it is true, were often attracted to foreign topography - to Egypt, to North Africa, to Australia, among other places - but none of these engagements was on the scale of the British in India.
