摘要

Exactly one century before Gandhi's historic march demanding the right to manufacture salt on the coast of the Indian ocean, instead of buying it as a costly good imported from England, Raja Rammohun Roy (1772-1833) was recorded as having denounced the abuses of the East India Company concerning the salt trade in India: in Bengal alone, tradition has it that 125,000 manufacturers of salt (molunghi) became victims of this monopoly of the English merchants. According to the Morning Chronicle, in July 1831, during a dinner given by the Company in Roy's honour at London, the guest of honour thanked the hosts for "bringing an end to a period in Indian history" in which "nothing was to be seen but plunder and devastation". He expressed his particular gratitude to his friend William Bentinck, the governor-general, who sought to raise the natives of India "in the scale of nations".
