L'autorite religieuse et ses limites en terres d'islam: Approches historiques et anthropologiques

The ten articles in this lively and enlightening collection all revolve around questions of religious authorities, their authority, and connections to state power and/or to wider society. In other words the scope is quite vast, and in the short introduction the editors laudably desist from trying to define a narrower analytical framework. This is perhaps not an 'edited volume' in the usual sense but rather a showcase testifying to the diversity and vitality of contemporary French Turkology, and more specifically to that of the "Centre d'etudes turques, ottomanes, balkaniques et centrasiatiques" at the Ecole des hautes etudes en sciences sociales (EHESS), where these papers were first presented at a "Journee d'etude" (workshop) in 2009. The focus is indeed thus not on the "lands of Islam" it their entirety or even necessarily on Islam at all, but on the Turkic or Turkish-speaking world in all its historical depth, from early modern Central Asia to Ottoman Egypt to the Greek Orthodox monastery of Patmos.
