It remains to be seen if the study of Islam in South Asia is truly undergoing a 'Shi'a' turn, but the contributions in the volume edited by Jones and Qasmi are welcome in a widening field of Shi'a Studies in the region. This addresses the relative lack of scholarship on Shi'ism outside Iraq, Iran and Lebanon, offering perspectives on a range of religious, political and social aspects of Shi'ism in South Asia. This contribution challenges previous studies' emphasis on viewing a Shi'a historical legacy emerging from those regions rather than South Asia. The works outline historical dimensions of the formation of Shi'i identities offering readers accounts of how religious convergences and divergences have shaped South Asian Shi'i communities and their relationships in the wider Islamic world, while touching on themes of religious reform, revival, and development of Muslim publics.
