Among the many questions raised by the Mongol conquests of the Near East, one of the most tantalising concerns the extent to which they acculturated themselves to their new environment. Questions concerning the extent to which they adopted the religions, cultures and customs of their conquered subjects continue to go back and forth with no easy resolution. This topic is important not merely because it is crucial to understanding the Mongols' changing identity, but also because issues of cultural adaptation sit at the heart of debates surrounding the rise, development and fall of the Mongol empire(s). Thus, this book of thirteen essays is well positioned in its scope and purpose to advance our knowledge on such themes.
