Dissertations offer original research. In the field of Chinese archaeology, a dissertation usually is the first study of an excavation site or the first secondary study of a subject, in which case it often includes material that has come out of the earth in the course of disseration research and writing. Only rarely does any dissertation lend itself to publication as a book without extensive revision. Archaeopress Archaeology in Oxford has made a bold effort to make archaeology dissertations available: Approximately 300 have been turned into books in the last ten years. Only one, Xuan Chen's work, is on Chinese archaeology.
