Guest editorial for the best papers of RailNorrkoeping 2019

This special issue of the Journal of Rail Transport Planning & Management assembles seven of the selected best papers submitted and presented during the 8th International Conference on Railway Operations Modelling and Analysis (RailNorrkoeping 2019), in Norrkoping, Sweden, on June 17th - 20th, 2019. The conference was visited by 250 delegates from 21 countries. About half of the delegates were from academia and the other half represented railway authorities, undertakings, suppliers, and consultants. Summarizing the feedback and evaluations, the conference was a success, with highly interesting research presentations, good networking and a friendly atmosphere. Timetabling, delay analysis and prediction, and network management were as before major topics, but we could also welcome presentations addressing energy saving and freight traffic planning. We noted that the number of contributions relying on simulations and/or statistical analyses has increased.
