In 1987, Our Common Future set out a new agenda for nations to integrate social and economic development with environmental protection. That book has since become a sustainability "classic" and is known worldwide for its definition of sustainable development-"development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (WCED 1987, p. 43).
