Introduction to the JPDC special issue on Perspectives on Parallel and Distributed Processing

摘要

Parallel and distributed processing has over the past 25 years evolved from being a niche discipline to become main-stream because of a number of innovations that have happened in tandem with industrial and societal demands. Parallel processing, that in the past was a niche discipline mainly in computational science (HPC), is today maturing as a mainstream technology as acknowledged by the wide adoption of multi-core systems by computer companies. But in order to make parallel processing mature, significant progress has yet to be made in how to harness parallelism holistically from applications via algorithms to infrastructure (software and architecture).
