Welcome to this special issue of the Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing titled General-Purpose Processing Using Graphics Processing Units. This special issue presents recent work by leaders in the field that highlights the benefits available through use of GPU technology to address a number of challenging computational problem domains. Accelerating a wide range of applications on GPU platforms is currently attracting a high level of interest.rnGPUs present the research community with an ultra-low-cost, massively parallel, data streaming compute platform. If we are able to harness the computing power available on these platforms, we should be able to overcome computational barriers that exist in a number of critical high-performance applications, and enable new applications not yet imagined. Given the recent advances in GPU technology and programming support, we expect to continue to see new research activity in this area.rnWe are pleased to include nine high-quality papers in this issue. These papers fall into the general areas of accelerating imaging applications, accelerating a more general class of applications, and tools for aiding in the development of applications and assessing performance.
