Importance of steric effects in the photochemical ring opening of isochromenes

The use of time-resolved X-ray crystallography is limited by the availability of suitably "caged" substrates that can be employed to initiate simultaneous reaction in a sufficient number of complexes in the crystal. Compounds which can be transformed into appropriate Substrates by photochemical activation, usually termed Photosubstrates, have been successfully used to observed Enzyme-substrate complexes.
