Epithelial cells play an important role in physiological and pathophysiological situations, having organ-, tissue-, type-, and function-specific patterns. As an intact system in the body, epithelial cells show biological similarities and differences between different cells, locations and diseases. Dr Kenneth Adler, one of the leading scientists in epithelial biology, has made a great contribution to our understanding of molecular mechanisms of epithelial bio-behavior and dysfunction in both physiological and pathophysiological conditions. Recently (1), he addressed potential mechanisms behind the epithelial cell-involved development of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Epithelial cells may be activated to produce a number of inflammatory mediators, e.g. oxygen free radicals, nitric oxide, and cytokines, leading to the compromise of epithelial cells or other cells in organs.
