摘要

Proteomic analysis is a powerful tool used to investigate protein profiles of cells, biopsies and fluids, explore protein-based mechanisms of human diseases, identify novel biomarkers for diagnosis, therapy and prognosis of multiple diseases, and discover new targets for drug development (1,2). Proteomics is a new research area in the world of organ dysfunction. However, communication between proteomics scientists and physicians/scientists who work in the field of organ dysfunction remains to be promoted. Recently, a number of editors of journals relating to critical illness and organ dysfunction have called on proteomics scientists to pay special attention to the importance of organ dysfunction (3). For example, epithelial cells are located in multiple organs/tissues in the human body, and are responsible for multiple functions. It has been proposed that epithelial dysfunction may be a potential mechanism of the development of multiple organ dysfunction (4,5). Furthermore, scientists have compared the variation in sample preparation techniques used in epithelial proteomic analysis, the similarities and differences between epithelial proteomics for different subtype cells, locations and diseases and the specificity of proteomic markers for diseases involving epithelial cells by considering epithelial cells as an intact system in the body (6). From this particular analysis of the published literature, we learnt of potential links between the findings from epithelial proteomic research and clinical questions, findings, diagnosis and prognosis and developed an understanding of intra-epithelial signaling, the consistency between genomic and proteomic appearances and the discovery of new targets.
