Highly sensitive and selective analyses of metal species, especially for actinides, in aqueous solution with minimal disturbance of species equilibria are required for studies of the chemical behavior of the metals under conditions of natural environment, in connection with the geological repository of radioactive nuclear wastes. Absorption spectroscopy is one of the most reliable techniques for the detection and speciation of soluble species and has been widely used for the characterization of actinides in so-lution. However, the conventional absorption spectroscopy has relatively low sensitivity for the actinides, ca. 10~(-5) to 10~(-3) mol·dm~(-3) depending on the molar absorptivity, while the solubilities of actinides in aqueous solutions of near neutral pH are generally two or more orders of magnitude less than the detection limits.
