This historic gatehouse is a structural component of the Chestnut Hill Reservoir Dam in Boston, MA. Substantial deterioration of the interior of this facility has occurred due to seepage and age since it was decommissioned many decades ago. Newly discovered historic record drawings from 1870 revealed previously unknown subterranean arched chambers below the subfloor area. Stabilization design plans required reconsideration based on findings. This paper describes the facility history within Boston's water system for context, the geotechnical exploration performed to confirm and better understand these subterranean chambers, and the overall design for stabilizing the structure with concrete fill to meet current dam safety standards.
