With its sweeping title, this collection of 10 essays is mainly concerned with Irish sites of memory (as well as a Scottish one) and the politics involved in making them. A comparative perspective is indicated by one essay on Elvas (Portugal) and another on Angkor (Cambodia). In a way, this is a book for Irish readers, as several authors do not explain the Irish events or developments commemorated but, rather, assume them to be known. The contributions, first given at a conference in 2002, are by Irish, British, Portuguese and French scholars from the fields of archaeology, sociology, architecture, heritage studies and geography.
