These are fascinating and strategically vital times for official Irish-language policy. The cumulative impact of the three pillars of support for the language - Foras na Gaeilge (the Irish Foundation, established in 1999), the Official Languages Act (2003) and the office of the Language Commissioner (instituted in 2003) - is being felt in their distinctive contribution to the mix of policy innovation and regulation which characterises the Irish case.
