National and European language policies

摘要

This volume contains the proceedings of the fifth conference of the European Federation of National Institutions for Language (EFNIL), held in Riga in 2007. It provides valuable insights into the debates about the prospects and challenges of coordinated language planning policies in 'Europe' (metonymically denoting the European Union [EU]). Unfortunately, the book suffers from a high degree of heterogeneity, as regards form, style and content. It includes a preface, two conference addresses,13'content' papers that range from scholarly articles to programmatic and polemical statements, and the 'Riga Resolution' (a kind of communique, approved by the EFNIL 'General Assembly' and rendered in the 23 official EU languages and Luxemburgish).
