On the way to statehood: secession and globalisation

The trans-territorial modes of organisation that currently command flows of capital, culture and people have come to define the present global age. One might therefore be tempted to question the relevance of state borders today. Yet Aleksandar Pavkovic points out that 'from 1990 until 2007 secessions have led to the creation of 25 new states which were given international recognition' (p. 1), with many other territories failing in their secessionist attempts for the same recognition.
