Language and identities

While it brings together a number of papers presented at a workshop in language and national identity, this book is not in any sense a conference proceedings. The articles brought under one umbrella here make a valuable contribution to the variationist literature, while also incorporating newer perspectives on the nature and importance of identity. The book is, therefore, likely to interest a diverse readership. The authors include both well-established and emerging scholars. Potential readers should bear in mind that the book's emphasis is overwhelmingly on recent British research. Of the 22 chapters, 10 (of the 14 research-based contributions) are in this category; the other 8 either engage with theory or provide overviews of a specific issue (Omoniyi's survey of language and identity in Nigeria, for instance).
