In this long awaited sequel to Ways with Words, Shirley Brice Heath masterfully weaves together the narratives of three generations of working-class black and white families from the Piedmont Carolinas, documenting the ways in which their lives and communicative practices have adapted to changing social and economic conditions. This new book underscores the important role of youth groups and community organisations in the language socialisation of adolescents, the shifting patterns of interaction and time spent amongst families, and the complex ways in which the social, economic and political backdrop of the last 30 years have shaped family arrangements, mobility trends, self-perceptions and interactional patterns.
