Beyond multiculturalism: views from anthropology

This book examines the openings, shortcomings and limitations of multiculturalism. Offering a wide view that encompasses different parts of the world, it reveals the different meanings of multiculturalism when it is used to describe trans-national populations, migrations from rural areas to urban centres or migrations to already multi-ethnic societies. Each chapter shows readers the ways in which multiculturalism - as a concept, descriptive category and political practice - is used by governments in the form of policies, as a way of marketing consumption, as a marker of urban spaces and as an instrument that creates new forms of exclusion and inequalities.
