摘要

Professor Adam McKeown, a reserve lieutenant colonel of Marines, has written a valuable book that taps into the often-neglected military ethics resources of literature and its historical background. English Mercuries: Soldier Poets in the Age of Shakespeare is not a work of military ethics, but it is a window into the soldier's experience of war often eloquently expressed and startlingly recognizable. The period of McKeown's book falls directly in the middle of the 'military revolution' famously hypothesized in 1955 by Michael Roberts. During the years 1550-1650, the size, range, and firepower of armies increased dramatically; organization and tactics were refined. These changes gave armies powers that for a time seemed almost uncontrollable. Under the influence of neo-stoical thinkers led by Justus Lipsius, the military revolution became in large part a moral one, which called on the soldier to change his stripes from those of scourge to those of moral exemplar, even protector of civilization.
