Using AutoCAD to Help Relocate a Map Collection: The University of Tennessee Libraries' Experience

Not only is AutoCAD software an invaluable tool for creating building plans, it works very well for relocating libraries. In the fall of 2006, the University of Tennessee Map Library was faced with planning the move of its collection. From the onset, AutoCAD was used to help plan the relocation, to create a virtual model of the new map space (a smaller area), to make it relatively easy to avoid potential setbacks involving space, and to aid the movers with a visual guide to use when relocating the collection. The use of AutoCAD helped everyone communicate with one another and saved the university time and money. This article will discuss the map collection relocation in detail and the incorporation of AutoCAD computer software into the process.
