A Case Study in Proactive Development: David Cobb, Harvard University's Curator of Maps

Harvard University has long been synonymous in the United States and throughout the world as being the creme de la creme in the university world, the pinnacle in whatever it sets out to produce. As a curator of maps at another university for some nine years, I have long admired from afar, and made efforts to follow, many of the undertakings of the Harvard Map Collection. It does seem that they tend to be a step ahead of the rest of us. Since 1992, the reason for this fact at the Harvard Map Collection has been primarily the leadership of David Cobb. This opinion is not only held within the relatively small community of map curators and librarians across our nation and globe but by Harvard faculty as well.
