Work-Family Conflict: A Model Of Linkages Between Work And Family Domain Variables And Turnover Intentions

This study examined unique antecedents of work-family conflict (WFC) and family-work conflict (FWC) in a full measurement and structural model with employee turnover intentions as the outcome variable. Using completed questionnaires from a group of factory workers (N = 432), structural equation modeling revealed that the data fit the proposed model well. Work stress factors were posited to predict WFC, and family responsibility was hypothesized to lead to higher levels of FWC. Work-role conflict and work-role overload were significantly related to WFC while role ambiguity was not. Family responsibility, as a predictor of FWC, was not significant in the model. Both WFC and FWC were significantly related to each other and each predicted turnover intentions. Directions for future research as well as implications for managers are discussed.
