Recognizers, grammars and parsers are standard tools used in modern natural language processing. Progress in these areas is regularly discussed at the biennial International Conference on Parsing Technologies (IWPT) and the nowadays biennial International Workshop on Finite State Methods and Natural Language Processing (FSMNLP). Both events are the premier forums of their respective associated special interest groups (SIG) of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL). IWPT is governed by SIGPARSE, the special interest group on parsing, and FSMNLP is governed by SIGFSM, the special interest group on finite state methods. This special issue of the Journal of Logic and Computation presents a selection of some of the best papers presented at IWPT 2011 or FSMNLP 2011.
