Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, Nigeria Ambitious and forward-looking public transport policy

In 2009, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola, Governor of Lagos State, adopted a new policy under which public transport is being transformed from a system run by informal operators into a regulated system. The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) is responsible for implementing the policy and the Transport Master Plan for Lagos initiated in 2005. The main aims of the policy are to significantly increase the public transport market share and to improve the quality of life of Lagosians from an economic and environmental perspective.
