MITIGATING ClRCUMSTRNCES IN LAND-BASED CRIME WITH INTERNET IMPLICRTIONS: AN ARGUMENT WHEN THE PRECURSOR IS INTERNET GAMING DISORDER

This paper presents a mitigating circumstances argument when it is likely the individual committing a land'based crime is suffering from a specific form of Internet Addiction called Internet Gaming Disorder, or IGD. The Latin verb from which mitigation is derived-mitigare-means "to make more gentle." Thus, by definition, mitigating circumstances in criminal law are conditions lessening the degree of responsibility of an offender. Reasons commonly include intention to cause less harm than was actually caused, a lack of premeditation by the offender, some existing mental disorder in the offender, and self-defence or provocation.
