In a Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET), in order to to get a better awareness of driving environment, drivers will exchange traffic-related messages by an devices called OBU (On Board Unit) which equipped on a vehicle, so it is important to verify the validity or integrity of messages before accept them. Lots of authentication protocols for vehicular communications were proposed, the better one among them is Zhang et al. [14]. But due to the long length of the signature, their protocol is not so efficient. In this paper, by using the group scheme of [21], we propose a secure and efficient protocol for vehicular ad hoc networks. Compared with [14], our protocol requires a shorter signature than that of [14], needs only 1022 bits signature length, compared with 3071 bits of [14]; To verify n messages, our protocol needs 4.8n+9 ms, compared with (8.4n+9) ms of [14].
