More than anything, this book is an autobiographical manifesto about intellectual curiosity and personal commitment as driving forces in geographical research. It stands in opposition to much of what is going on, especially in American geography where theory and a handful of fashionable ideas dominate the Journals and professional meetings. If today those concerns are global warming, food security, neoliberal economies, or terrorism, then in ten, or maybe even only five years, they will be something else. To Daniel Gade research is not about following contemporary trends for reasons of social relevancy or fashion, but the passion of pursuing one's intellectual curiosity wherever that leads.
