摘要

In this issue we publish a roundtable devoted to participatory research in historical geography. This takes the form of a paper by Dydia DeLyser on the possibilities of extending models of participatory research into the historical domain, drawing on her own research on early women pilots in the United States, followed by three open-ended responses from researchers working in rather different contexts: Laura Cameron, drawing especially on the experience of Canadian historical geographers working with indigenous communities: Caroline Bressey, reflecting on her work with, and within, the UK-based Black and Asian Studies Association; and Hilary Geoghegan, extending the ambit of public history further to consider work with science and technology enthusiast groups in a museum context. The combined effect of these four succinct yet powerful contributions is to put the ethics, methods and politics of participatory research firmly on the agenda of historical geographers. The roundtable raises further intriguing questions about the extent to which participatory research agendas in geography and the social sciences can learn from the experience of historical geographers, as well as vice versa, specifically in the context of culturally variable notions of memory and of our obligations to the past. And it should also stimulate further reflection on what happens when models of participatory research (or indeed public history) which have been developed in one national setting, or one discipline, are transplanted into new contexts.
