This book, by Cristiano Antonelli and Federico Barbiellini Amidei, deserves a comment aside from the merit of the arguments in the volume, for two main reasons. The first concerns the importance and the clarity of the research question that identifies a puzzle to be solved by economists and that can be synthesized as follows: how to combine the increase of total factor productivity (TFP) recorded in Italy after the second world war (WWII) until the early 1990s with the (relatively) low R&D intensity of the Italian productive structure.
