Deeply influenced by the American preservation movement to protect and preserve the remnants of wild nature, many environmental philosophers have sought to give moral standing to the intrinsic value of wild nature and ecosystems, moving environmental philosophy from an anthropocentric to an ecocentric framework. Invaluable as this has been in shifting attitudes and practices toward nature from exploitation to respect, it is less clear how this approach gives moral guidance to human-inhabited nature, the norm on a planet now exceeding seven billion humans.
