Policy Perspectives: Environmental Management and Renewable Energy in the Pacific Islands

Energy supply and consumption have contributed to local environmental problems in the Pacific Island region. With respect to environmental management in the region, development of renewable energy systems could be an important strategy. However, renewable energy systems have received little attention. In this paper, we analyse possible solutions for developing renewable energy in the Pacific Island region from policy perspectives. We believe that implementing national energy policies in favour of renewable energy, furthering development of renewable energy via international aid, and providing sufficient capital resources and technical assistance will greatly enhance renewable energy systems.
