Colorado River Delta and Upper Gulf of California: Focus of Binational Research

The Colorado River Delta and Upper Gulf of California was the geographic focus of the 2001 special call for proposals from three entities: University of California Institute for Mexico and the United States (UC MEXUS), Mexico's National Council for Science and Technology (CONACyT), and the Centro de Investigation Cientifica y de Educacion Superior de Ensenada (CICESE) scientific research center from Ensenada, Baja California. The objective of this special program was to provide seed funds for developing projects in all disciplines to enhance our understanding and knowledge of the delta and gulf regions to help inform water policy and management for the area. A second objective of the program was to foster and strengthen the linkages among research and academic institutions in the United States and Mexico. On January 30, 2003, at UC Santa Barbara, principal investigators from the University of California system and Mexican institutions involved in the nine awarded projects presented their preliminary research findings in a small academic gathering, especially designed to encourage discussion and to give guidelines for the members of the review and steering committee for the 2003 call for proposals.
