The new Egyptian Code of Practice for the design of steel structines has proposed an alternative formula for the effective width factor, ρ, for sections with slender plate elements. The new formula is more consistent with the minimum limiting width-thickness ratios for slender elements and ensures a smooth transition from a stress distribution of pure compression to a stress distribution of pure bending. A comparison between this formula and the previous classical formula, which was derived from a modification made by the AISI to Winter's formulas is presented. A study of doubly symmetric plate girder cross sections is used to show the use of this proposed formula.
