Broadcast Equipment Makers Cultivate Digital Seedlings in Asia

Amid faltering signs of economic recovery, BroadcastAsia2002, the largest broadcast equipment exhibition in Asia, attracted 10 percent fewer exhibitors this year than last year. Even so, participants expressed hopeful opinions that the gradual, albeit slow, spread of digital broadcasting in the region will go hand in hand with a business recovery. Dr. Tony Tan Keng Yam, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defense of Singapore, delivered the keynote speech at the show. He said 70 percent of companies in the information industry in Singapore predict that business in the second half of this year will turn upward. This contrasts with 40 percent of companies that said so at the beginning of this year. Running from June 18 to 21 at Singapore Expo (Suntec) in Singapore, the show this year attracted 650 companies from 41 countries. This was the eighth BroadcastAsia trade show. Once it took place every two years, but it has become a yearly event. With 80 percent of exhibitors from outside Singapore, the show had a distinctively international flavor. Participants came from all over the world, including China, France, Korea, Spain and Britain.
