Sharp-Roxy Electronics Corp. (M) Sdn. Bhd. (SREC), based in Johor, Malaysia, was established in 1980 as a 50-50 joint venture with the Roxy Group, a large agency company for Sharp in Southeast Asia. Hiroshi Terada is SREC's Managing Director. Roxy plays a background role in the company. Sharp executives handle most management duties at SREC, which employs about 2,200. The company produces color TVs, including flat-screen TVs, for such markets as Japan, the United States, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. It also produces camcorders for the U.S. market. The Malaysian factory is Sharp's main factory for making CRT color TVs in the region, although the company also has factories for CRT color TVs in Thailand and China. In September 1999, SREC reached the manufacturing milestone of 25 million TVs. In the beginning of 2000, the company also started to produce wide-screen TVs.
