Falling Prices, Disc Media Push Sales of Digital Camcorders

FY2003 has seen rapid growth in demand for digital camcorders both in Japan and abroad. Manufacturers' forecasts for the camcorder market in FY2003, including both digital and analog camcorders, vary from 13.7 million to 14.5 million units, as compared to 13.2 million units sold in FY2002. On the global market, demand has been shifting from analog to digital camcorders at an accelerating pace, with new demand concentrating on digital camcorders. Digital camcorders now make almost all of the Japanese camcorder market. The market continues to grow not because of users replacing analog camcorders with digital camcorders, but because additional digital camcorders are being sold to users who never owned analog models.
