Hitachi Focuses on Marketing of RAM Disc-Based Digital Camcorders

Hitachi, Ltd. this April introduced to the world two models of the company's third generation of digital camcorders that use DVD-RAM and DVD-R discs as recording media. Non-tape digital camcorders also have been introduced by other companies. But Hitachi believes this exposure will help enhance recognition of its products. Hitachi in FY2003 expects to sell about about twice as many digital camcorders as it did in FY2002, says Takahiko Nakae, General Manager, International Sales Planning Group, Digital Consumer Marketing and Product Planning Department, Broadband System Operation, Digital Media Division. This spring Hitachi began introducing the DZ-MV380A and the DZ-MV350A third-generation DVD-RAM camcorders to markets outside Japan. The new models feature compact designs. They use 2.5-inch LCD panels as opposed to the second-generation DVD-RAM camcorders that employ 3.5-inch panels. In terms of volume, they are about 40 percent smaller than their predecessors. While maintaining the diameter of RAM discs at 8cm, Hitachi reduced the size of the disc cartridge to achieve a compact camcorder that measures 60 x 93 x 147mm. The new models also support SD card, which is a new selling point.
