In December, terrestrial digital broadcasting will begin in Japan in the Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka areas. Many in the broadcasting and electronics industries expect that terrestrial digital broadcasting in Japan will have a significant impact for two reasons. First, such broadcasts will deliver much better images and much improved sound quality in comparison with images and sound viewers now receive through terrestrial analog broadcasts. Second, users will be able to receive terrestrial digital broadcasts on mobile equipment, such as mobile . phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs), as well as on car navigation systems and car audio equipment in moving vehicles. By comparison, today's mobile equipment cannot properly receive digital broadcast satellite (BS) broadcasts, which have been offered in Japan since December 2000. Meanwhile, the terrestrial digital broadcasts offered in the United States and Europe cannot normally be received on mobile products. Broadcasters in Japan have been conducting test transmissions of digital terrestrial broadcasts since August 6.
