Hitachi Maxell Expands Lineup, Builds Up Production of DVDs

Hitachi Maxell, Ltd. is building up its lineup of DVDs in efforts to strengthen its position in the area of optical recording media. Meanwhile, the company continues to produce conventional magnetic tapes. The company offers DVD discs in five formats, including recordable DVDs (DVD-Rs), DVD-RAMs and rewritable DVDs (DVD-RWs). The company is expanding production of these discs. Digital media now represent 70 percent of Hitachi Maxell's recording media business. The company expects falling prices for DVD hardware will stimulate demand for DVD discs featuring large recording capacities. The company will promote the shift from CD discs to DVD discs at an accelerated pace. He described the market outlook and the company's basic business strategies. Hitachi Maxell offers both video-use and data-use DVDs. The company now focuses on DVD-R and DVD-RAM discs. However, it also is improving its lineup of DVD-RW discs. Through such discs the company hopes to further establish its image in the area of optical technology.
