Sony Sets Stage for High-Definition in Growing Digital Camcorder Market

Sony plans to produce 7 million camcorders in FY2004. Most of these will be digital models. Following on the success of Sony's Mini DV, Digital8, MI-CROMV and DVD camcorders, Sony intends to bring out its high-definition camcorders in the fall of this year. Shoji Nemoto, President of Digital Imaging Company, IT & Mobile Solutions Network Co. of Sony Corp., expects the worldwide camcorder market will further grow. "We predict demand for 1.8 million units in Japan, 6.35 million units in North America, 5.65 million units in Europe and 3.7 million units in the rest of the world, bringing the total market size to 17.5 million units in FY2004," he says. "The growth in Eastern Europe is huge. China is also showing growth." Sony has steadily increased its camcorder production every year since the company started making the product. It produced 6.6 million units in FY2003, up 15 percent from FY2002.
