For quite some time, Japanese manufacturers ha e dominated the digital still camera (DSC) industry. Since 2002, howe er, Taiwanese manufacturers ha e been making headway in this field.. By applying the CMOS sensor module to cameras with two million or fewer pixels, Taiwanese companies were able to offer cost-effecti e digital cameras with attracti e features. Thus a niche market formed for these companies. According to iSuppli, the top fi e Taiwan DSC manufacturers in 2003 were Premier, Altek, Primax Electronics, Asia Optical and Ability Enterprise. Altogether they produced more than 1.5 million digital cameras, and captured more than 30 percent of the global DSC market. Analysts forecast strong demand this year, so the DSC market could reach 60 million units. This translates into an annual growth rate of 20 percent. Taiwan manufacturers hope to expand their share to 30 percent of the market in 2004, and more than 40 percent in 2005.
