Shift to DVD Recorders Opens the Door to Exciting New Applications

The wide use of DVD-based videos is leading to rapid digitization of video software. In 2003, the demand for DVD players exceeded that for VCRs in major markets worldwide. This turnabout has occurred earlier in China and other Asian markets. In 2002, world demand for these two products was a little less than 40 million units. But in 2003, sales of VCRs registered double-digit negative growth while DVD players continued to post double-digit positive growth. DVD players finally had outstripped VCRs in worldwide sales. Meanwhile, sales of DVD-based video software exceeded that of VHS cassette-based software in 2001. That meant video software had entered the digital age.
