Pixel-Based Rear-Projection TVs Poised To Challenge CRT Models

CRT-based rear-projection TVs, which use CRTs as a light source, have dominated the market for 40-inch and larger TVs. While popular, these conventional rear-projection TVs provided low luminance and narrow viewing angles. Now rear-projection TVs based on other technologies are challenging the market leader. Specifically, 40- to 60-inch rear-projection TVs using pixel-based display devices are offering improved image quality, making them increasingly popular. These pixel-based display devices include high-temperature polysilicon thin-film transistor (TFT) LCDs, liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCOS) reflective LCDs and Digital Micromirror Devices (DMDs). TFT LCDs are used mainly in three-LCD systems employing three transmissive LCDs. DMDs, used in Digital Light-Processing (PLP) projectors, appear in single-chip DMD rear-projection TVs.
