Drawing on their accumulated technological know-how in film cameras, camera manufacturers since about 2001 have been developing single-lens reflex (SLR) digital cameras with interchangeable lenses. The market for SLR digital cameras has gradually expanded so that, as of now, more than 20 models of SLR digital cameras have been released in Japan (Table 1). Camera manufacturers are especially confident that potential demand is significant for SLR digital cameras. Many expect that in 2004 the market for SLR digital cameras will explode. Some camera manufacturers forecast shipments in 2004 to double or triple. Many expect that this is the year SLR digital cameras will gain a firm footing in the market.
