New Anode Material Powers Up Sony's Lithium Ion Batteries

Sony Corp. introduces Nexelion, a hybrid lithium ion rechargeable battery that employs a tin-based amorphous material for the anode. This material provides about 30 percent more capacity per unit volume than the company's existing products. The company plans to market the industry's first tin-based lithium ion battery as a battery pack for Sony's Handycam camcorders. As the popularity of small mobile gadgets with increased functionalities soars these days, the demand for smaller lithium ion rechargeable batteries that pack larger capacities is growing as they serve as power sources for these portable products. To meet this demand, instead of using a graphite-based material for the anode as found in conventional batteries, Sony has adopted tin-based amorphous anode material in the Nexelion hybrid lithium ion battery. This resulted to an increase in the battery capacity by about 30 percent per unit volume compared to conventional products.
