Touch panel systems are now in widespread use in many applications. Of these systems, among the most common are four-wire resistive film systems. These resistive film systems have many features in common with five-wire, six-wire, seven-wire and eight-wire systems. Non-resistive film systems, which include optical systems, have different characteristics. Many of the early touch panel systems were built to order. That is, they were designed specifically for the LCDs or panels they served. Today, touch panel system manufacturers no longer have to build such systems to order. They can choose from a growing number of panels, drivers and interfaces that are ready-made for an assortment of LCDs. Manufacturers also offer LCD-integrated touch panels.
